Stortorget(the english version)
Stortorget was founded in 1538 by a mayor named Jörgen Kock and at this time was the sea just a few blocks away. The old buildings were demolished so it could be more room for the new square. Even the Helgeandmonastery got demolished. The Stortorget was so central and close to the port, so it became a marketplace where you exported oxen and other livestock. There was also a water reservoir which was used until the 1800s. It was here that the population of the city got their water from, which in turn came from Pildammarna. There is a Torgbrunnsculpture at the square which was created by Stig Blomberg, this sculpture will remind you of the reservoir.
Because the Stortorget lies so close the station, the visitors discover the square very quickly. Around the square there are many special buildings: Jörgen Kocks houses from the 1500s, Residentet, Malmö Town Hall, Apoteket Leo Kramer and hotels in the French chateau-style. On Stortorget you can also find John Börjessons impressive equestrian statue of King Karl X Gustaf.
I think that this square is very beautiful and very cosy. However, the square do not get so much attention, many people prefer Gustav Adolf's Square instead. People have decided to make the square more "alive" and change it in the near future. When it is Malmö-festival the square has many more visitors, because you can find all great artists and celebrities at the square. I usually do not visit Stortorget because I'm always at Gustav Adolf Square instead. But when I'm here I enjoy the beautiful view. A plus is that on the square, there is Max, and a hamburger kiosk, so if you are hungry you can always go to Stortorget. Last Easter there were three large "eggs" middle at the square.
